I think small companies have the possibilities of hiring inexperience developers because this means they will also have small rates for these employee.

Sorry Ted for the delayed response. I don't know of many companies that offer internships to High Schoolers, but you might be able to get a summer job as a game tester while still in High School. Although testing is not particularly enjoyable work (in my opinion), it is a good way to see how games are made from the inside. I'm not familiar with many game companies in Maryland, so I can't help you there.

Thaks for the well wishes, Arne. I have since started my own company, 24 Caret Games. With a lot of hard work and a bit of luck, I hope 24^ can create some great games!

Thank you for your article.

I don't yet know if I want to go into the gaming industry, and your article helped me check my assumptions: How does the gaming industrie work internally, and how is it to work on commercial games.

That said, I study physics at the moment and game programming is a hobby I took up 9 months ago, though already creating stories and worlds for pen-and-paper roleplaying games far longer, but always for my own enjoyment.

Best wishes,
And good luck with the game you work on! (is Lead Gameplay Programmer for "Secret Agent Clank" still current?)

Okay, I'm interested in entering the gaming industry, so I'm focusing in Comp Sci. It's been my primary goal for a while. Heh, since I started learning Visual Basic and later Java, whenever I played video games I'd wonder, "How the HECK did they DO that?". Point is, I want to get some kind of internship for the summer. Something that does not require an in-depth knowledge of programming, techniques, etc. The primary issues are, one, I'm in high school, and two, I live right between the two gaming centers of MD, about 45 minutes from either.
Any companies I can look into that are offering internships for high schoolers in MD?

adv|thanks|ance

Thanks for the info :) Let me ask you about my situation which is similar and yet a little different. I've been programming my whole life, so I made the mistake of going to college for Physics because I wanted to learn something new. I dropped out for a couple years and now I'm going back and about 5 classes (a semester or so) away from finishing my degree. Looking at jobs out there now I want to actually get back into IT, and I'd really like to do work as a game programmer, more specifically for consoles. I was hoping you might give me any suggestions/directions/places to look for information... For example, I'm wondering how important a degree specifically in CompSci is (the corollary being, will the Physics BS help me at all?) and what avenue I should go to in order to try and get into the field. I'm pretty good at C++, plus I've started doing more with DirectX and goofing around with C#/XNA. I've done some Flash games before, but I'm planning on putting together a small demo for something else. How painful of a process is this going to be and should I just be directly applying for places until I hit something? Any tips/info, like I said, would be greatly appreciated it :) TY :)

Yaooy - Programming languages are just tools used to create games. It's important to use the right tool for the job. So, I cannot give you a definitive answer. Here's a few things to think about. If you are new to programming and are trying to learn the basics of game development, I would start with C#. It's quick and easy to get something basic up and running. The fundamentals of programming are the same regardless of the language, so starting programming with any language is fine. If you already know how to program and are trying to learn what we use in the game development industry, most companies use C/C++ for the actual game development and C++/C# for the tools. At some companies, gameplay programmers use a scripting language to develop the gameplay. Some popular examples are LUA, Ruby, and Python, but often it is a proprietary language like UnrealScript. I hope that helps.
